Duncan Ibbotson
started watercolour painting in 1990 whilst preparing for early retirement from a career in Banking. Watercolours are still on the agenda, but oils and acrylics, including metallics, have been the media used in the last fifteen years or so. Drawing is the main ingredient in the preparation of landscapes, flowers, portraits and still life, along with the use of collage. Whilst on a painting holiday tutored by David Morris and Caroline Metcalfe-Gibson of Ravenstonedale he was introduced to the Open College of the Arts and completed the advanced painting course.
Some six years ago he took up pastel painting and for a short time was a pupil of the late master pastellist Christopher Assheton-Stones. Since this fruitful acquaintance he has spent most of his painting time with this flexible and exciting medium. He uses many different supports and techniques and is attracted to the close contact between hand and surface in applying strong bright unmixed pigment, a main feature of his pastel painting. He now runs workshops and courses in addition to giving talks and demonstrations.
He exhibits widely in the North West and many of his paintings are in private collections. He had his first successful solo exhibition,"Lakeland Contrasts" at the Observer Gallery, Wigan in September 2003 in addition to joint exhibitions at the Severn Studio, Brantwood; The Brewery Art Centre, Kendal; Gallery H, Arnside ; Youdells of Kendal; Garstang Arts Centre; The Old Bakehouse Gallery, Clitheroe; Signature Gallery, Kendal. His latest major exhibition was held in May 2005 at The Upfront Gallery, Hutton –in-the-Forest. Examples of Duncan’s work can be seen at present at Off The Wall Gallery, Corbridge and the new StudioArt Gallery, Warrington.
Duncan is Chairman of the Silverdale Painting Group and has recently moved to Hest Bank, Lancaster.
