Silverdale and Arnside have a quality of light, range of land and seascapes, variety of terrain and protected flora and fauna, which inspire creativity in local people, who demonstrate this in the well-established art and craft trail.
How Did It Start?
The idea was proposed in 2004 by three Silverdale artist friends – Annette Kane, Kate Bentley, and Penny McLeod, who were later joined by others for the inaugural exhibition. They opened their studios, used local venues, made banners from sheets and encouraged villagers and visitors to wander across muddy fields in search of local art.
Such was the positive response that the trail has grown organically, developed a website, included Arnside and other organisations, provided workshops, demonstrations and music and in recent years has up to 90 exhibitors.
A wide range of art forms, styles and techniques are available for the public to enjoy: – furniture, paper, textiles and upholstery, ceramics, jewellery, wood, metal and glass work, photography in addition to painting and sculpture.
Shelley Hackett co-ordinated the ‘Trail’ from 2010 to 2011 in conjunction with all the volunteers who contribute to make the event an exciting, varied and inspiring experience and Debbie Copley and Clare Martin continue as joint coordinators.
Workshops and demonstrations give visitors an idea of how exhibits are produced and the experience of trying new skills. New ideas for Makers workshops are always welcome, to provide a wide range of creative opportunities and involve children and young people.
The mix of amateur and professional members encourages people to ‘test the waters’ of public opinion and give new exhibitors confidence. Locals and visitors walk and cycle around the venues, chat to strangers and marvel at the range of ideas that have been translated into tangible objects.
We continuously review and develop the event, which would not exist without volunteer help from exhibitors and members of the local community.
We welcome ideas, skills, transport assistance, enthusiasm and experience from new participants who can enable this Art Trail to continue.
