James Devaney

I have always been fascinated by the magic of drawing and how an image can be created, an idea illustrated or a memory recalled, simply through an arrangement of lines and colour on paper. Although I have a natural inclination to detailed drawings I often work in reaction to this, for instance drawing more freely by using a sharpened stick dipped in ink. Again, while attracted to realistic images, I like to contrast this with more stylised representations even to the point of the abstract. I also like the calligraphic effect of pen and ink - the rhythm, repetition, flow and flourish.

I specialise in landscapes of the local area, particularly the AONB and the larger Bay area. In landscapes, I feel that of more importance than an exact representation is an image that rings truer with one’s associated memory, as recalled at a distance in time and place. I often like to represent the same scene in different ways, be it via watercolour, acrylics or mixed media, as a realistic or stylised painting, or as an abstract or printed image.
