Roy uses Cleft Wood for all his products. It is produced by cleaving (splitting) a log along its length when green. The resulting sections being interesting profiles with a continual grain that becomes three dimensional – a quality only described as tactile.

This method of working wood does have its drawbacks, as the joinery is far more complicated

At the Greenwood Centre, a small one-man craft workshop in Lancashire, Roy has created techniques and designed equipment to eliminate many problems. An exact geometry is obtained that is used throughout the construction of each product.

Cleft Woodwork is ideal for smaller items such as stools, children’s chairs and small garden gates. It utilises small and coppiced trees often used only for firewood.

All Roy’s wood comes from local sustainable woodland.
