Jan uses print and frottage to capture, reveal and reflect on a moment in time using the human form, clothing, bird & butterfly imagery to express ideas of transition and transformation. Her work occupies an ambiguous space between the real and the symbolic.
She started her career in couture dressmaking with Zandra Rhodes and went on to work with Jean Muir, David and Elizabeth Emmanuel and also in an international capacity for the Queens dressmaker, Norman Hartnell.
Jan has always experimented with a variety of materials, found objects and techniques but now works mainly with porcelain, her sculptures, Portraits small vessels and ‘art to wear’ are delicate and textured, her ceramic technique is self-taught and is directly influenced from her couture dressmaking skills working with fine chiffon and embroidery draping fabrics directly onto a figure.
Jan studied fine art at Chelsea School of Art and is a graduate of the Byam Shaw where she studied sculpture. Jan exhibits widely, to view a list of her shows please take a look at her website or email her directly.
