I am a textile artist living and working on the edge of the Lake District. I studied for a City and Guilds in Embroidery at colleges in Kendal and Lancaster. Since then I have been building up my business designing and creating both a range of textile jewellery and larger wall pieces. I now have a studio at Farfield Mill near Sedbergh where I make and sell my work.
My work is inspired by the landscape around me, wherever I go. I might work from subjects as diverse as a rock face, a piece of rusty metal or an entire mountainside. I love the effects of the ever-changing light, the colours and the textures. This is reflected in a variety of textured, machine embroidered pieces.
I create my larger pieces by layering organzas on velvet and then applying heat to reveal the lower layers of colour. This is densely machine embroidered and the resulting work is rich in colour and texture. Using heat is not an entirely controllable technique, but this reflects man’s limited control over the landscape.
I also make textile jewellery which I have machine embroidered and hand beaded, in a wide variety of vivid natural colours. The range includes necklaces, bracelets, brooches and both drop and stud earrings. Like all my work, each piece is unique.
