Phil studied Ceramic Design at Lancaster Art School and Preston Polytechnic and he has had a career in the field of ceramics for almost 40years. After graduation he moved to the heart of the ceramic industry in Stoke on Trent, training as a tableware modeler and mold maker at Royal Doulton.  His next move was into higher education  where he taught ceramics at Middlesex University in London, and Kent Institute of Art and Design and Lancaster University.

On retiring from Higher Education he moved back to Morecambe where he now works from home producing domestic wheel thrown pottery and handbuilt sculptural and raku pieces. He can also be found teaching beginners and improvers at ‘Phil’s Clay School’ in Halton Mill based in the picturesque Lune valley. He believes that making with clay is a lifelong journey with endless pathways to follow.

“As a potter I strive for that moment when the kiln door is cracked open and there is… the perfect pot!”
