I think of myself as a mixed media artist. My work has evolved over the years from being predominantly textile in the widest sense of the word. The handmade books followed on from this and then finally, in 2012 I fulfilled a long held ambition and bought an etching press. Course at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal with the very inspiring Iain Sloan followed and printing became an important part of my work.
Many of my prints are used the covers of handmade sketchbooks and to create concertina sketchbooks.
Recycling has also been a strong thread running through my work since 2010 using O.S. maps and second hand books. These are cut up and recycled into book forms. I use the same book forms with my own prints.
Everything comes together in the recycled type cases for which I take an old book and cut it up and re-stitch it to fill all the compartments of the case. I like the way the books can still be read in a fragmentary manner as I do strive to keep the pages in the right order. Initially I worked with full size cases but have branched out into a variety of sizes which make them accessible to a wider audience. Usually I choose my own book but am happy to accept commissions.
